8/3/2023 Fishing Report
There isn't much to report that has changed from last week. Fishing has continued to be outstanding. In most of the creeks around town the bead bite has officially started. It is going to keep getting better over the next couple weeks. At lower water fish 8mm beads, at Cowee it's worth bumping up to a 10mm bead. Right now, fresh egg colors are hands down the ticket. If you are fishing a bead and it's not working, try changing sizes first, and then change the color.
The salmon fishing continues to be strong in the salt and the freshwater. The brighter fish will come from the ocean, so if you want to eat a salmon right now get a silver one out of the salt. The Humpy Hooker continues to be the hot fly. Thane, Echo and Shrine are the best spots to fish the salt water right now. Here in the next week or so the adventurous angler should try fishing a full sinking line of the rocks at Lena for an early coho! Throwing giant baitfish patterns can work well and also allow a shot at some rockfish if you are lucky.
A couple different folks mentioned they thought they may have hooked into cohos in the freshwater this last week. While they could've been larger Dollies, it is getting close to the time of year where we should start seeing coho around town. All in all, the fishing is great and should continue to be for several more weeks.
As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports. If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way! You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com. Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release. Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.
See you on the water!
